In a moment of sincerity, I feel I must speak the truth and admit that I have an unusually and ridiculously overactive imagination. This sad reality has been the cause of many unfortunate (usually embarrassing) incidents in my life. And sadly, the story I am about to tell you is no different!
You see, it all started last Thursday night, when I was on my way to a meeting on campus. This particular meeting is held at 9PM, well after most classes have gotten out. While there are usually people milling about on campus for various activities, the pathway I take to walk from where I park my car to where my meeting is held was quite deserted, as it normally is. Normally, I love the fact that not many students take the same route as me. It means I can sing along to my ipod, and generally act like a spaz when I feel like it. But normally it's daytime outside; normally it's nice and bright; normally my imagination doesn't get the best of me in the middle of the day.
However, it was not daytime, nor was it nice and bright. My pathway was only lit by a dim, solitary street lamp and the light of the moon. As I made my way up the pathway, I stuck my earphones in my ear to ease my anxiety. I had only made it a few steps when I noticed a shadow off to my left. My initial reaction was relief that someone else was walking the same lonely path as me. I quickly took out one of my earphones so that I could hear the approaching shadow behind me. I didn't hear a thing! In my head, I was thinking whoah, this person is unusually quiet. Usually you can hear a fallen leaf crunch, or a tired shuffle...but I didn't hear a sound besides my own! This thought alarmed me, and I began to pick up my pace. Much to my growing fear, the shadow also seemed to appear to speed up.
Doing what any normal, self-respecting person would do, I picked up the pace a little more. Of course, the shadow kept pace with me. I didn't want to turn around, because then I would give away the fact that I knew he was there. A ridiculous, irrational thought, I know, but at the time it made perfect sense to me. So, I decided to stop and pretend to tie my shoe, so I could be ready to whip around for a surprise attack!! However, much to my surprise, my shadow stalker also bent down to tie their shoe...
I'm quite embarrassed to admit the fact that it took me until this very moment to realize that the shadow stalker that I was so terrified of, the shadow stalker that I was prepared to turn and fight, was none other than MY OWN SHADOW!!! Yup, that's right! I was getting ready to fight my own freakin' shadow. You know how sometimes the light will hit you just right to give you that nice double shadow affect?! It's happened a million times before, and I always knew that both were my own shadows before. But apparently this night was different for some reason! I guess it just so happens that all my common sense flees with the setting of the sun!
So I guess the moral of the story is if you are being followed by a potentially freaky shadow stalker, you might want to make sure you know where your own shadow is before you turn to fight!
First off SWEET title, I definitely had to take a look at it. This story of the shadow totally reminded me of our times in the dark alleys of NY. When we would walk down the long, dark alleys and basically hug each other we were so scared...but then there was always that light at the end of the alley...thank goodness!
